About Arizona
From My Travel Guide.Com
Arizona contains some of the most spectacular scenery in the whole of the United States. The Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Parks are just some of the highlights. Phoenix, the largest city in the State, shares borders with Scottsdale, the primary resort destination in Arizona. Both cities have a variety of accommodation and attractions, unique shopping, fine art galleries and many cultural events. Other State attractions include Tucson, the second-largest city; Saguaro National Monument; Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum; Kaibab Forest; Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park; Hoover Dam; Montezuma Castle; and Tombstone, site of the infamous shoot-out at the OK Corral.
PHOENIX: The seventh-largest city in the USA and capital of Arizona, Phoenix has enjoyed a growth in popularity recently thanks to its improved airport facilities and a large investment in extensive urban redevelopment. Today, it claims to have more 5-star hotels than any other US city. Just some of the new development projects in the downtown area include Renaissance Square, a 26-storey office tower with a newly completed 28-storey twin tower; the US$20-million, 225-suite Hilton Hotel, located in the downtown business district; the Arizona Center (an 8-block complex with a 600-room hotel, offices, restaurants, shops and entertainment); and Patriots Square Park, in the
center of Phoenix, with a sophisticated and spectacular laser light system that is visible for miles around.
Sightseeing: Encanto Park; Pueblo Grande; Papago Park, including the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden; South Mountain Park; and the Heard Museum, devoted to the art, anthropology, history and Native American culture of Arizona.
Excursions: The Grand Canyon is accessible by air from the center of Phoenix on Arizona Air, by helicopter on Grand Canyon Helicopters or by the Grand Canyon Railroad (tel: (520) 773 1976).
LAKE HAVASU CITY: This desert city has become the new home of London Bridge and it now spans the Colorado River. It is the focal point for an array of English-style shops, pubs and lodgings. Dismantled stone by stone, the bridge was brought over from England and reassembled in Arizona. Further information is available from Lake Havasu Tourism Bureau (tel: (520) 453 3444).
SCOTTSDALE: 'The Valley of the Sun'. Founded in 1888 and known as 'The West's most Western town', Scottsdale has matured into a mecca for lovers of relaxed lifestyles. Year-round sunshine makes the outdoors a way of life in Scottsdale, with its 125 golf courses, scores of tennis courts, and pools and spas at almost every resort.
Sightseeing: Taliesin West, the home and workshop of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is open for viewing daily. A new 2-storey aquarium has been built in the Scottsdale Galleria with more than 100 species of fish and marine life.
Excursions: Many river-rafting expeditions on the Salt and Verde rivers are organized
by Desert Voyagers (tel: (602) 998 7238), as well as combination river rafting and desert jeep tours which take in the Sonoran Desert and its rivers. There are also special Barnstormer biplanes (replicas of the post-World War I open cockpit 2-winged Waco). Rides, complete with 1930s goggles and helmets, are available, with aerobatics displays for the brave. Other outdoor fun includes gliders, hot-air balloons and
horse riding.
SEDONA/OAK CREEK CANYON: An attractive town nestled in the extraordinary red-rock formations and cliffs at the foot of Oak Creek.
Sightseeing: The beautiful Verde River Canyon provides lush scenery and there are prehistoric Native American ruins to be seen.
Excursions: Trips into the canyon are available, sometimes including Western-style barbecues by the river and live entertainment.
TUCSON: This popular winter resort is one of the fastest-growing areas in the USA. Surrounded by a ring of mountain ranges in the Sonoran Desert, it is known for its constant sunshine, and its location, only 160km (100 miles) from the Mexican border, is apparent in its architecture, cuisine and lively fiestas and cultural festivals.
Sightseeing: Tucson Children's Museum, with many hands-on exhibitions, is a favorite
with children and adults; Tubac, an artists' colony with shops and galleries, is also the site of a walled fort and archaeological dig; and Tohono Chul Park, a desert sanctuary where visitors can learn about and experience the desert with the added benefit of cool refreshments available at the park's Tea Room.
APACHE TRAIL: An extraordinary scenic drive passing through arid deserts, winding canyons, looming buttes, glistening lakes and the ominous volcanic dome known as Superstition Mountain.
Sightseeing: Goldfield Ghost Town and Mine Tours; Superstition Mountain Museum; Tortilla Flat, an old stagecoach stop offering 'killer'
chili and prickly-pear cactus ice cream; Roosevelt Bridge, the world's largest single-span bridge; and Tonto National Monument, well-preserved cliff dwellings occupied 500 years ago by the Salado Indians and featuring examples of their weavings,
jewelery, weapons and tools.
GRAND CANYON: This is perhaps the most famous natural tourist site in America and its impact is awe-inspiring. This massive rend in the earth can be reached by a variety of different ways: airplane, helicopter, railroad, 1901 period steam train from Williams to the South Rim, or by raft. There are some hotels in the Canyon but advance booking is usually essential. As the Canyon is far from any city, those wanting to save time and see it all can take a 'flightseeing' trip over the Grand Canyon, the Havasupai Canyon (a remote side canyon of the Grand), Canyon de Chelly and the spectacular Monument Valley.
NATIVE AMERICAN RESERVATIONS: Navajo Reservation spreads over more than 64,750 sq km (25,000 sq miles) and is home to 200,000 Navajos. Once a semi-nomadic people, they are known for their adaptability and have incorporated many skills into their culture from the Spanish and early settlers. They live in hogans (dome-shaped houses of log and adobe) in small, scattered settlements. In the middle of the Navajo Reservation sits the Hopi Reservation, comprising 6475 sq km (2500 sq miles) and accommodating 7000 Hopis. They have lived in the region for 1500 years and are known for their amazing agricultural talents in farming dry and difficult land. The Hopis live in snug pueblo-style villages on top of mesas. This area is treasured for its outstanding natural beauty. Further information is available from Native American Travel Center, Suite 114, 4130 N Goldwater Boulevard, Scottsdale, AZ 85251 (tel: (602) 945 0771; fax: (602) 945 0264).
LAKE POWELL: A scenic wonderland of red rocks and blue waters.
Excursions: Many tour boats ply the waters of this large and beautiful lake. Information on lake cruises is available from Wahweap Lodge and Marina. Tel: (602) 278 8888.
TOMBSTONE: Tombstone owes its enduring appeal to the brief showdown at the OK Corral. Recent movies such as 'Wyatt Earp' and 'Tombstone' mean that the queues to see the yard where Earp and his brothers fought it out are longer than ever. This notorious town plays on its past with restored sites and attractions called the Boot Hill Graveyard, the Crystal Palace Saloon, the Bird Cage Theatre and even has its original newspaper, named the Tombstone Epitaph. Re-enactments of famous gunfights are played out each day and vistors can even experience a public mock hanging.
